Every Day Brings a New Light
Home      Dedication Page

The SSgt Richard K. Metro College Scholarship Memorial Fund

was established in2007, is a tribute to the memory of my son, Rich.

Distributions will be awarded annually to any college student in support of their efforts to pursue a given aspiration, and will vary in amounts according to our sales throughout the year.  A check will be made out to the student’s university, NOT to the college student.  The applicant who wins will be notified either by phone call, or mail.

As a general guideline, college recipients should have demonstrated an understanding of excellence as a function of persistence and hard work, through academic achievements and a well-roundedness which exemplifies the concept of “success".

Nominations for this award should be submitted and mailed to Sweet Briar Candles c/o Susan Tobin, P.O. Box 1886, Carthage NC 28327, from January 1 until August 31, along with a brief essay supporting the proposed recipient, and college transcripts (minus social security numbers or date of birth). Letters of recommendation from the nominee’s professors, coaches, employers, or mentors are also appreciated.

 About Richard K. Metro

Richard Kevin Metro was born in Ohio on the 2nd of December1968. He was the only child of Susan and Richard Metro and attended South Range High School in North Lima, Ohio.  He was a champion in sports, competing in Football, Basketball and Track.  He broke the school record for low hurdles, in both his high school and college competitions.  He competed in the State Finals in Columbus Ohio in 1987, where he placed 5th in the state.

In 1992, Rich graduated from Kent State University in Kent,Ohio with a degree in Political Science. While at Kent, Rich served as a cadet in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp and was a member of the Arnold Air Society.

Following graduation from Kent State, Rich enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he obtained his career as a Laboratory Technician and Bioenvironmentalist. On April 5, 1997, Rich married a young lady from North Carolina and they had two children together: a son and a daughter.

On September 9, 2004 at 35 years old, Rich died a husband, father, scholar, and successful member of the military community. He had a passion for flying, had a dynamic personally, a unique sense of humor, and appreciated the companionship of good friends and the joy of  laughter. Rich was a fearless hero and leader with a gentle heart; whose loving and             exuberant personality affected everyone he met. He was an outstanding individual with a   deep love and respect for nature and animals. No one was more loyal as a son, husband,    father and friend. His love for his family and friends was exceeded only by his love to live life to its fullest. Rich was driven to be a success and his life, brief though it was, demonstrated that commitment.

In some small way, by building this fund in his name, Richard K. Metro, though gone from this life, is not gone from ours.
To all of you who have taken the time to read this page and learn about my son, I send my deepest thanks.

Sincerely,
Susan Metro-Tobin, Sweet Briar Candles
